Brief Idea About Reading Section
Reading section is about 60 minutes, it consists of three or four passages of increasing difficulty and a total of 40 questions to be answered in the given time period. No extra time is awarded for transferring your answers to the Answer Sheet.
Though the Academic and General Training Reading Tests are equally examined, the Academic Reading Tests are slightly more difficult and challenging than those of General Training. However, one has to answer more questions correctly on a General Training Test to receive the same grade
Here is the list of types of questions asked in the Reading test:
Multiple choice
Matching headings
Gap filling
True/false/not given
Sentence completion
Classification
Short-answer
Table, diagram, or flowchart completion
Tips to Tackle Reading Section
The first trick for any test is Be Attentive yet Relax
Just focus on what you read, don't get sweat and tense
Make it a game and play your best shots (looks silly??!! Try it and feel it)
Practice well before the exam commences. Get familiar with all the variety of tasks
Read the questions thoroughly first, and then read the passage. This will make you easy to grab the answer or at least take you nearer to it. Some will prefer the reverse way
No need to read the whole passage, because you are asked to just answer the questions. So, the best possible way is Skim and Scan. Skim the unwanted and Scan the relevant
Manage the given time properly (60min for 40 answers). No additional time to fill the answer sheet. This instruction is to alert you, not to make you worry
Check the spellings before filling your answer sheet
The answer might be right, but a misspelling of it will cost you mark (i.e treated as unanswered)
In most cases, the questions are asked as per the order of the passage
Underline the important phrases, synonyms and relevant lines, while skimming
If the passage is challenging or unfamiliar, don't get worried. Clearly read the passage again. Try to find the answers
Keep it in mind that every answer can be found in the passage only (means Questions relates to the Passage only)
Note any special features such as italics, capital letters, underlining, figures, graphs, tables geographical locations, time periods, dates, person or region names, unique or special words, keywords, synonyms etc.
As there is no negative marking, answer the questions which you’re not sure about as well. But don't leave blank
Write doubtful, similar, or nearest answers, which might score you mark
Cross out wrong answers in multiple-choice tasks to avoid confusion
In True/false/not given task, most students are getting confused with False and Not Given. False means the question is contradictory i.e not match the fact of the sequence. Not Given means if the question is totally out of place or not related to the sequence.
